第三节:阅读理解阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。A
Who is there among us who hasn't dreamed of having his or her own small ( maybe, several years later, even big) business, and having wonderful freedom, both from a boss and from the time clock: the freedom to make up our own rules for our work, and our own plans---arranging our own hours of work? That way work would be both painless and fun. Or, so we imagine.
Well, in fact it isn't quite as simple as that. Yes, it is true that being the boss has its satisfactions and that you can arrange your working hours freely if you own your own small business. But in those early years of starting your own business, you shouldn't think of a free day, not to mention flying off for a month's vacation. It is not unusual for new business owners to work seventy or eighty hours a week, and if there is a day off, that day might need to be devoted to accounting(算账).
But this negative picture doesn't destroy the beautiful hopes. The possibility of getting something wonderful in return--both material and mental--continues to drive that large number of people who start up small businesses each year in the United States.
61. From the first paragraph, we know that everybody hopes_______.
A. to rule others
B. to be his or her own boss
C. to get a time clock
D. to be free from work
62. Most new business owners have to_______.
A. work more than 10 hours a day
B. devote himself to accounting
C. fly to some places in the world
D. have a day off in a week
63. The expression "negative picture" in the text probably means_______.
A. a terrible experience
B. a poor picture
C. limited freedom
D. unpleasant situations
64. The beautiful hopes will never be destroyed because_______.
A. people love beautiful things by nature
B. people have a strong desire to seek personal gains
C. small businesses make big money each year in the US
D. small businesses have advantages over big companies
A university graduate described as a“respectable and intelligent” woman is seeking professional help after being convicted of (证明有……罪)shoplifting for the second time in six months.
Ana Luz, recently studying for her PhD, has been told she could end up behind bars unless she can control the desire to steal from shops.
Luz ,who lives with her partner in Fitzwilliam Road ,Cambridge ,admitted stealing clothes worth £9.95 from John Lewis in Oxford Street ,London ,on March 9.
Phillip Lemoyne ,prosecuting(起诉), said Luz selected some clothes from a display and took them to the ladies’ toilet in the store .When she came out again she was wearing one of the skirts she had selected, having taken off the anti-theft security alarms(防盗警报装置).She was stopped and caught after leaving the store without paying, Mr. Lemoyne said. He added that she was upset on her arrest and apologized for her actions. Luz, 28, was said to have been convicted of shoplifting by Cambridge judges last October, but Morag Duff, defending, said she had never been in trouble with the police before that.
“She is ashamed and embarrassed but doesn’t really have any explanation why she did this,” Miss Duff said. “She didn’t intend to steal when she went into the store. She is at a loss to explain it. She is otherwise a very respectable and intelligent young lady. She went to her doctor and asked for advice because she wants to know if there is anything in particular that caused her to do this.”
Judge David Azan fined Luz £ 50, and warned : “You’ve got a criminal record. If you carry on like this, you will end up in prison, which will ruin your bright future you may have.?

If women are mercilessly exploited(剥削) year after year, they have only themselves to blame. Because they tremble at the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion, they are always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stores. Clothes which have been worn only a few times have to be set aside because of the change of fashion.
Changing fashions are nothing more than the intentional(故意的) creation of waste. Many women spend large sums of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn. Women who cannot afford to throw away clothing in this way, waste hours of their time changing their old-fashioned dresses. Skirts are len neck-lines are lowered or raised, and so on.
No one can claim that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society. Fashion designers are rarely concerned with necessary things like warmth, comfort and durability (耐用). They are only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the fact that women will put up with any amount of discomfort, as long as they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn't at some time in his life smiled at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin dress on a winter day, or picking her way through deep snow in high heeled shoes.
When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are obvious. Do the constantly changing fashions of women's clothes, one wonders, reflect basic qualities of inconstancy(反复无常) and instability(不稳定性)? Men are too clever to let themselves be cheated by fashion designers. Do their unchanging styles of dress reflect basic qualities of stability and reliability(稳定可靠)? That is for you to decide.
69. Designers and big stores always make money_________.
A. by mercilessly exploiting women workers in the clothing industry
B. because they are capable of predicting new fashions
C. by constantly changing the fashions in women's clothing
D. because they attach great importance to quality in women's clothing
70. To the writer, the fact that women change their old-fashioned dresses is seen as ___________.
A. a waste of money
B. a waste of time
C. an expression of taste
D. an expression of creativity
71. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE? ______.
A. New fashions in clothing are created for the commercial exploitation of women.
B. The constant changes in women’s clothing reflect their strength of character.
C. The fashion industry makes an important contribution to society.
D. Fashion designs should not be encouraged since they are only welcomed by women.
72. By saying "the conclusions to be drawn are obvious" ( Line 1 to Line 2, Paragraph 4), the writer means that ___________.
A. women's inconstancy in their choice of clothing is often laughed at
B. women are better able to put up with discomfort
C. men are also exploited greatly by fashion designers
D. men are more reasonable in the matter of fashion
Usually, when your teacher asks a question, there is only one correct answer. But there is one question that has millions of current answers. That question is “What’s your name?” Everyone gives a different answer, but everyone is correct.
Have you ever wondered about people’s names? Where do they come from? What do they mean? People’s first names, or given names, are chosen by their parents. Sometimes the name of a grandparent or other member of the family is used. Some parents choose the name of a well-known person. A boy could be named George Washington S a girl could be named Helen Keller Jones.
Some people give their children names that mean good things. Clara means “bright”; Beatrice means “one who gives happiness”; Donald means “world ruler”; Leonard means “as brave as a lion”.
The earliest last names, or surnames(姓), were taken from place names. A family with the name Brook or Brooks probably lived near brook(小溪);someone who was called Longstreet probably lived on a long, paved road. The Greenwood family lived in or near a leafy forest.
Other early surnames came from people’s occupations. The most common occupational name is Smith, which means a person who makes things with iron or other metals. In the past, smiths were very important workers in every town and village. Some other occupational names are: Carter — a person who owned or drove a cart(运货马车);
Potter — a person who made pots and pans.
The ancestors(祖先) of the Baker family probably baked bread for their neighbors in their native village. The Carpenter’s great-great-great-grandfather probably built houses and furniture.
Sometimes people were known for the color of their hair or skin, or their size, or their special abilities. When there were two men who were named John in the same village, the John with the gray hair probably became John Gray. Or the John was very tall could call himself John Tallman. John Fish was probably an excellent swimmer and John Lightfoot was probably a fast runner or a good dancer.
Some family names were made by adding something to the father’s name. English-speaking people added –s or –son. The Johnsons are descendants of J the Roberts family’s ancestor was Robert. Irish and Scottish people added Mac or Mc or O. Perhaps all of the MacDonnells and the McDonnells and the O’Donnells are descendants of the same Donnell.
73. Which of the following aspects do the surnames in the passage NOT cover(涉及)?
A. Places where people lived.
B. People’s characters.
C. Talents that people possessed.
D. People’s occupations.
74. According to the passage, the ancestors of the Potter family most probably _______.
A. owned or drove a cart
B. made things with metals
C. made kitchen tools or containers
D. built houses and furniture
75. Suppose an English couple whose ancestors lived near a leafy forest wanted their new-born son to become a world leader, the baby might be named _______.
A. Beatrice Smith
B. Leonard Carter
C. George Longstreet
D. Donald Greenwood
76. The underlined word “descendants” in the last paragraph means a person’s _____
A. later generations
B. friends and relatives
C. colleagues and partners
D. later companions

Best ways to relax when stressed
81. ____________________
Go to feel the sunshine outside. Take a long drive. Open the windows and feel the wind while driving. Fuel up your vehicle, and go to places you’ve never really been to. New routes will distract your mind, give you something new to see, and keep problems and stress at bay.
82. ____________________
One of the best methods to get relaxed is to plug in the earphones, and listen to some music. Whether or not you agree, music is a therapy in itself. Listen to your favorite music, dance to the turnes, and sing to the hymns – it might not solve the problem you’re stuck in, but it might just distract you for a while.
83. ____________________
Breathing exercise is simple, but works perfectly. How? Let me explain. Suppose that you have a stress ball in front of you. Now, keep staring at it for a while as you breathe in and breathe out. Don’t let your mind wander anywhere else, and just concentrate on the ball. This is one of the best ways to relax your mind when there’s little you can do to relieve yourself.
84. ______________________
When the weather is getting you down, and you’re not sure how to deal with the voices in your head. All you need to do is pick up a few bars of chocolate, and settle down for a laughter riot. Fetch a DVD of your favorite comedy movie, and watch it till you’re out of stress.
85. ______________________
Take a day off from work, slip into your night suit, and go to bed. Put your phone on the silent mode, shut the door, take the blanket on, and rush into the world of dreams, where no stress exists. Get enough sleep, for it’s the best relaxation technique for stress.
